Song #39 & #40 – Best That I Can & Cruel Empire

I love you guys.  Just so you know.  It continually hits me that I have continuous support from a tight knit group of people who actually respect my work as an artist.  I wish there were more of you sometimes, but I’m certainly thankful for the few true blues!!  Here are two songs!  More to come in the near future.  I’m leaving for tour next week so things are a bit of a scramble for me right now.  I hope you’ll all enjoy these tidbits!  Wish I could write more… these two songs sort of explain themselves though 😉

Song #37 – Desk Away

Desk Away is a special song.  It is not part of the #100songs project, but I’m giving it to you all for being such patient subscribers!  I’m headed to two different studios in the coming weeks and should be done with the songs for the project by mid-February.  There will be more than the 50 I promised because I’m giving you all some unreleased material from a few years back as well.  I wrote this when my friend Payton Marovich first moved in with me a few years back, just after the conclusion of my 13 year project, Dufus.  Payton and I have become close friends and have inspired eachother musically and recorded on each other’s projects.  Pretty cool how music can make us friends.  He and I met through my music when he was living in Flagstaff, Arizona.  He moved here and has since been creating awesome music under the name Paxtor. I suggest checking it out!  This one was recorded by 23 Psaegz in an early incarnation.  This is an old pic going along with it, though I’m not sure if it has many of the same members or not… I forgot to write it down!

Where the body goes, known
Where the mind goes, nobody knows
Weaving a string in and out of your toes
Wrap all around you up to your nose

Traveled around the world on a cloud
Now that I’ve seen the whole way around
Found myself on the ground
Sound through the mountains, shouting aloud,

“I’m away from my desk, far away from my desk”

When you were born your mind was pure art
They tossed you around, gave you a name
Told you no one’s the same
You’re special, you’re different
I see that clearly, pure magic
I see you with stars and sparkles all in your eyes

“I’m away from my desk, far away from my desk”

Opening my ears, a hidden message
Muddied with noise and conversation
What to do? Who to be? Who to love? What are we?

Where will take this crazy old world
Where will you take us you crazy old girl
Will this spinning ever end
And where will it land, where will it land?
Where will it land?

“I’m away from my desk, far away from my desk”

Stay away, stay away, stay away, stay away

Song #36 – Song for Grandma “Bea”

This was a bit of a difficult year for my family. Last year, while in the middle of the songwriting project, my grandmother passed away.  She was a wonderful woman, and I wrote her a little song to be played at her funeral.  My grandfather passed about a year later, just like they say happens.  Both very crafty and hard working, generous people.  They lived long, healthy lives.  I was glad to know them.

Extra – Little Bitta Reggae Horn sheets and audio

Hi Gang!

This is a special one just for the $7 subscribers and up.  Right now, I’m madly working to finish the final 15 songs of this project, with two recording sessions coming up in less than a month with two different bands… but also having a show opening for my old friend Kevin Kinsella of John Brown’s Body I thought I should add horns to our old fan favorite, Little Bitta Reggae.  Here’s a pic of some of the parts and a synthesized audio version of it as well.  Enjoy!

Song #35 – Woggy Woeggy Gwoo – 100songs

Happy New Year 2016 to all my 100songs subscribers!  What an experience this year has been.  We are all growing and learning… always learning if we allow for it in our lives.  I know as I grow older, the tendency to grow more stubborn and think that I know what’s right grows and shrinks simultaneously.  In my twenties I felt strongly that the revolution I dreamed up was the right one for the human race.  What I soon learned was that the rest of the human race was thinking differently and there was no single way for all of us.  Its freeing to learn that you don’t actually have to be the one to single-handedly save the world.  The world may need saving, but we can all only do our singular part.  I aim to live right by those around me and to make conscious choices rather than blindly accept what’s placed before me by the media machine and every other controlling giant in this world.  My little rebellion might make huge waves far in the distant future, just as many others in our history.  Only time tells truly.

This song #35 of 100songs, entitled Woggy Woeggy Gwoo, was a heck-of-a-lotta fun to make with Laura Lee Jones.  We took turns putting our ideas forth… what it yielded was superior weirdness!  I think it needs and can have no explanation, really.  Just give it a listen and let me know what you think!  I hope your year was wonderful and that this upcoming one grants great growth gregariously upon your wonderbrow.

I picked up a pocket
It was locked, goddammit!
Aww

Oh fuck
Oh!
Ralph and Larry
Those hairballs!
Spacing out on Zenith Garbitrobe
Humans all around
Spacing on the sound of human garba-trolls

Slurp, slurp
Moths, all brown and hairy
Zuzuzuzub
Boss, it’s really scary!
Zub Zub Zub
Moths in my obituary!

(scary gun sound)
Beauty

Ooo.
What?
Ooo.

Beauty

And then, the horror!
The picture of a naked horse
Backward
Showing me his nethers
Nevermind the weather
Warm
Warm worms
Turns out they were caterpillars
Wiggling around on 4 legs
Not wooden pegs
Who you callin’ a ho?
You pirates
No
Yup, of course
Silly horses
Crazy naked horse pirates in space

The moths and moth avengers
(scary gun sound)

Woggy Woeggy Gwoo

Here’s what else they said:

Hey Larry!
Who in the heck is that in the yellow hat?
Oh that’s just me
In my telephone underwear
Blinky blinky doo
Dooky doo, dooky doo

Song #34 – Young and Beautiful

This is one of those songs that I feel shy about showing people and really self conscious about because it is kind of like other songs that exist already.  It’s also a love song, and I guess I feel sometimes weird about sharing my love for one person with the world… I grew up in a home that was moderately affectionate and has grown more affectionate over the years, but I think I was made to feel a bit guarded about outward love declaration.  Anyway, here it is, and I’ve even put a picture of the woman it was written for.  Laura has been an incredible benefit in my life, a person who I feel deeply for and work well with, a difficult combination to find!  Anyway, I think the song says it much better than I can in this typed out form.  I hope you all will enjoy it.  This is another one from the Blackdog Sessions.  Thanks to Dominic and Stan (my bandmates) for continuing to push me into playing this one and making me feel a bit more comfortable with a public declaration of my feelings… and, of course, thanks Laura for inspiring me all the time!

I’m going home
Even if I have to go alone
If no one I know is there
I’m gonna look in the places where
I would hide when just a child

Where we…
Where we grew up together
Friends bound in the pleasure
In the playground where we first kissed
At night alone in the moonlight
Turn around and that feeling enters my heart and ignites

Oooo
You young and beautiful
Our bodies the same
Move through you, you move too
I wander through these places
Remember all the faces

I’m going home
After all of the places I’ve roamed
Been all around the world
Thousands of dreams have unfurled
But I want to turn around
And go to

Where we grew up together
Friends bound in the pleasure
In the playground where we first kissed
At night alone in the moonlight
Turn around and that feeling enters my heart and ignites

Oooo
You young and beautiful
Our bodies the same
Move through you, you move too
I wander through these places
Remember all the faces

And if you’re looking closer
You might fall in the habit
Of running barrel over
When you try and grab it
The past is gone, you can never get back
But you can still go home, man
You’re running away from the home that you’ve got
Instead of adding a page to the plot

I’m going home
Cuz I don’t wanna be alone
Coming home to you
I know that’s what I’m supposed to do
Instead of hiding like a child
We will grow up together
Friends, bound in the pleasure
To the playground where we still kiss
At night, alone in the moonlight
Open up, and that feeling enters my heart

Oooo
You young and beautiful
Our bodies the same
Move through you, you move too
I wander through these places
Remember all the faces

You, young and beautiful
You, young and beautiful
You, young and beautiful
Our bodies the same.

Song #32 – Mistrust Is Mechanical (#100songs)

Oh yes, the end is clearly in sight!  We’ve been at this project all year round.  So many people I’ll need to thank publicly at the end of this all.  It’s been wild and painful, but mostly inspired and progressive!  I’ve learned so much as an engineer, producer and songwriter as I look backward over this year.  I regret slightly that I have not been able to get all 50 songs completed by my January deadline, but we have been working!  Not to worry!!  We’ve managed to rehears 7 newbies with the 23 Psaegz and another 5 with a smaller form of the band which is tentatively being called Multibird… or VsVvs…. or Faergolzia… any votes?  comment below!  We’ll be recording at the end of January at Blackdog with the 23 Psaegz, and I think we will be recording in NYC sometime in February again at John Kilgore Sound, where we recorded with Faergolzia during our tour in September which took us to Europe.

This song was recorded here in my studio and also at Gil Mortio’s place in Brussels, Belgium.  He’s an awesome musician whose project name is Joy As a Toy.  Check em out!!  I sent Gil a rough, lo-fi recording of my voice and guitar and he did everything else.  It’s a pretty wild interpretation of my original sketch.  I love that, you know, like when a person takes what you said and turns it into something which is totally different but still allows you to maintain your original point.  I think I’d call this mutuality with individualism, a lovely combination, revolutionary, really.

Like a needle in a haystack
put it in a backpack
pick it throw away again
put it in a pigpen

zip it in a ziplock
take it to the pick pock
it would seem that mistrust is mechanical
response to environment biological
when i breath this mistrust build a globule
spittle in the middle of my throat, botanical
seems mistrust is… mechanical

piddle in the middle of a boat in monaco
needle in a haystack
put it in a back pack
take a piddle on the roof rack
pick pocket payback
there’s a nickel on the dashboard
plastic figure of his lord
prays to it every day
stole my wallet just the same
it would seem that mistrust is mechanical
response to environment biological
when i breath this mistrust build a globule
spittle in the middle of my throat, botanical

it would seem that mistrust is mechanical
response to environment biological
it would seem that mistrust is mechanical
response to environment biological
it would seem that mistrust is mechanical
response to environment biological
mistrust is mechanical
mistrust is mechanical
